- Atmospheric Rivers (ARs) are a ubiquitous midlatitude phenomena characterized by narrow regions of intense water vapor transport, strong winds, and heavy precipitation. This study delves into the characteristics of ARs in five distinct climates with unprecedented spatial resolution. Two simulations represent past climates, enabling the exploration of AR responses to insolation variations induced by differing orbital configurations. The remaining three simulations correspond to present climate, double CO2, and quadruple CO2, conditions facilitating the analysis of AR responses to greenhouse warming. A novel feature detection method, independent of resolution andmean state, is developed to identify and compare AR characteristics across these five simulations. Regardless of the warming mechanism, orbital or greenhouse, warmer temperatures amplify ARs, with maximum values of integrated vapor transport and precipitation increasing at rates of 6.3% per Kelvin (adhering to the Clausius-Clapeyron scaling) and 5.7% per Kelvin (analogous to other saturated hydrometeorological environments) respectively. Per degree warming, the amplitude of the precipitation changes are higher for orbital warming while the amplitude of moisture transport changes are higher for greenhouse warming modulated by the lower tropospheric stability. Theobserved shifts in AR frequencies are primarily attributed to alterations in large-scale circulation systems controlled by the column mean latitudinal temperature gradient. However, this attribution is highly dependent on the AR detection tool employed. Similarly, the geometric characteristics of detected ARs, such as length and area, are also sensitive to the choice of detection method. Given their strategic location, providing 90% of poleward moisture transport, >35% of midlatitude precipitation, and contributing to some of the most extreme precipitation events in the current climate, it is evident that shifting AR patterns have played a significant role in shaping Earth’s past and would continue to do so in the future.
